INHERITING THE HOLOCAUST
History, Memory, & Legacy:
The Freunds in Germany, 1898-1943
Storytelling allows us to enter history; personal stories add empathy and identification. Using family letters, accounts, photos, documents, and artifacts, we follow my father and grandparents, from assimilated, patriotic Jews who fought and died for Germany in World War I … to success and happiness in roaring 1920s Berlin … the inconceivable rise of Hitler -- and the step-by-step marginalization, segregation, and violence they experienced under Nazi rule... and the narrow, and by chance, escape for some in 1939 – and the fate of others.
